Collaboration

We’re in a Pandemic. Global warming. Sometimes we read the news and it is really easy to get down about what is happening in our world. We can’t change everything, and most of us have a very small sphere of influence that can further depress or get us down. It’s at these times where it is important for us to work together.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

At ISB this year it is easy to be proud of what is happening. In this copy of the Library and Tech Updates, I thought I would share some of those things currently happening that our community that is only possible when we work together.

  • We’ve been able to fill over 200 book requests from the Main Library in a single week
  • We welcomed new families and students through technology training and meeting
  • Tech Council students ran the technology training for new students
  • The ES, MS, and HS Librarians and staff have worked together to maintain as many services as possible for the community
  • Tech is working with counseling to deliver equipment to families in quarantine or overseas
  • and much, much more

While it hasn’t been easy, it is good to see how a community can pull together to make things happen when we know it is so very important. As parents and students of the community, you part of these collaborations as well. You communicate your needs to us, request items, and when needed some have been to campus to drop off or pick up items.  While we may have to do this for a while longer, it is as a collaborative that we will succeed. We want to be back face to face as soon as possible. However, we are confident that we are still providing education and students are still learning.

We hope you will continue to request books from the library or let us know what else we can do to help.

1)  Requesting Books:  You can go to the library home page: library.isb.ac.th and click on the library catalog to see if we have the book or books you are interested in.   Then go to the Book Request Form linked at the top of the page to request books. (See screenshot below)

2)  Book Pick-Up: Once the books have been pulled, bagged, and delivered downstairs, you will receive an email telling you the books are ready for pick up from the Main Library table by the panther at the front of the school

3) Book  Return:  There is a Main Library Book Bin at the front of the school by the panther where you can place any books you are returning.

BOOK REVIEWS!

Infinite Country by Patricia Engel.

Sometimes in life, we just can’t catch a break. In this story about a Colombian family that attempts to find a better life for themselves in America quickly realize that ‘a better life’ is a state of mind and not a location. The family suffers some major setbacks and is forced to make some tough decisions. All this while Mauro and Elena desperately try to hold on to their love for each other. A great contemporary immigration novel that shows the struggles that come with leaving your country.

Magic Lessons  by Alice Hoffman

The novel begins in England in the 1600’s when Maria, a baby girl, is abandoned in a snowy field.  She is found by Hannah, a woman who is skilled in the ‘Nameless Arts’.  Hannah soon realizes that Maria also has the gift and begins training her, warning her that these skills should only be used for good.  The novel follows Maria’s path from England to Salem in order to find the man that abandoned her after declaring his love for her. Magic Lessons is a story about learning the ‘Rules of Magic’, the strong bonds between women, unlikely friendships and most of all that the only thing that really matters is love.  The first book in a series about the powerful Owens women. One of my all-time favorite authors is Alice Hoffman and yet again she showcases her masterful storytelling.
