Good Research Happening @ISB!

It has been a really wonderful year for research at ISB. Whether it was students in the MS getting consistent instruction throughout their Social Studies and English Classes in collaboration with Ms. Kehe. Or the HS students putting together the Ted Talks, Shark Tank event, or the Extended Essay, it seems that we have really hit our stride in prioritizing research skills for students at ISB.

This week was another milestone. After several years of work on developing a set of comprehensive standards we now the ISB Research Standards for students. Ms. Kehe and myself, along with Maggie Hagan, pulled on research, library, and technology standards from all over the world including ISTE Technology Standards, the American Library Assoication, and many more to combine them to produce our standards.  Wednesday in our Professional Development time for teachers we were able to present our new standards to Middle School and High School English, Social Studies, and Science teachers the new standards.

We were very pleased that the standards were received well by the teachers, that being said, in our audit of the research standards we had found that ISB teachers already are doing a good job incorporating research instruction into the curriculum. Now we have a scope and sequence that will not only streamline the research process at ISB, the standards will also provide teachers the knowledge of what students know as they come into their classes and what they should be accomplishing as the students exit there classes.

It is fair to say now that as students leave ISB they will have had multiple chances to apply the skills necessary to navigating this world of mis information and data overload. These are life skills as well as academic skills that will better prepare our students for the next phase of their education. Exciting times at ISB in the Main Library.

Have a great weekend,

The Main Library Staff

BOOK REVIEW! Buying Time – by Joe Haldeman

A fun read that has loads of dystopic overtones, enough space flight and ships for sci fi lovers, an underlying story of mystery and chase to keep those fans entertained and a bit of romance tossed in for good measure. This book has it all. Travel to the ends of the galaxy and beyond with Joe Haldeman’s book Buying Time. In the not so distant future it becomes possible, with enough money of course, to become imortal. Or does it? This book moves fast so pay attention as from the start we are on the run. Perfect read for the beach or just relaxing as it is a page turner.
