EARCOS Weekend Workshop Oct 26-27 Connecting Mathematics to the World Around Us

October 26, 2019 - October 27, 2019

Greetings Community of Leaders and Learners,

We are surrounded by mathematics and encounter it everywhere we go. Yet many students move through the school system without recognizing that mathematics is everywhere and without feeling the presence of mathematics in their lives. The focus of the EARCOS Sponsored Weekend Workshop: “Connecting Mathematics to the World Around Us” will be on sharing applications of mathematics and examples of where mathematics lives that can be used to encourage students to view the world through a mathematical lens now and for the rest of their lives. Facilitator Ron Lancaster will provide participants an imaginary mathematical pair of glasses that they can share with students to help them think mathematically outside of the classroom and care more about the subject.

Ron Lancaster is an Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) at the University of Toronto where he teaches mathematics courses for pre-service middle and high school teachers. He has over 20 years of experience teaching grades 7-12 mathematics. Ron’s professional activities include consultations and conference presentations in North America, Asia, England, the Middle East, Africa, India, and Europe. Ron is an author for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (The Mathematical Lens), the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (Mathematical Snapshots) and member of the Advisory Board for the Museum of Mathematics in New York City (MOMA).

The “Connecting Mathematics to the World Around Us” workshop is designed to help K-12 teachers bring out the beauty and applicability of mathematics for their students. In this workshop, participants will put on a pair of mathematical glasses and view the world through a mathematical lens. They will model what we would like our students to do – to see mathematics everywhere; to think mathematically outside of the classroom and to appreciate its beauty and importance. They will learn how to create rich mathematical questions for students related to daily life; design; art; architecture; photographs; images from Google Earth; videos and newspaper articles.
