Reminder: Diversity Collaborative School Survey

The Diversity Collaborative, in conjunction with CIS and the Center for International Education at George Mason University, is conducting a survey to collect baseline data about the gender and cultural diversity of teachers, heads of schools, leadership teams, and board members in international schools in order to better understand the career path for leadership positions.

To date, nearly 80 schools have completed the survey. If your school has not filled out the survey, we appreciate your encouraging your school to complete this survey and sharing the demographic make-up of your schools’ teachers, senior staff, top leadership, and board. The link to the survey is posted below.

All responses are anonymous. Data from the survey will be collected and stored at George Mason University and made available strictly for research purposes.

Mapping a Path to Culturally Responsive Leadership with Darnell Fine & Renee Green

Inspired by Malcolm X’s words, “We can’t lead where we won’t go,” you will be invited to take a journey of self-discovery and engage in the inner work of personal transformation. As leaders, we cannot expect our school communities to critically reflect on their biases if we don’t do so ourselves. These four (4) weeks of facilitated content are more than an online course. It’s a whole new way of learning. Each week’s content (reading/video/online asynchronous discussion) can take between 1-3 hours of your time. Register here.

Teaching and Learning For Intercultural Understanding

The purpose of the Institute is to engage in personal and collaborative learning to further develop intercultural understanding in ourselves, each other and the children we teach. The Institute will focus on answering these essential questions: What is intercultural understanding? How can we nurture and develop intercultural understanding? How does intercultural understanding promote inclusion, equity and social justice? How does intercultural understanding foster character and wellbeing? How can the Framework for Developing Intercultural Understanding (Rader, 2016) be integrated into teaching and learning? Learn more/Register here.

18 & 25 February 2021

Inclusive Recruitment – Advertising, Application to Appointment

One of the root causes in the gap of having a diverse staff representation at all levels is largely due to ineffective recruitment processes. The processes need to be robust in monitoring and evaluating that all outcomes through the recruitment intake cycle are fair and reasonable. The session will explore how to ensure that recruitment systems that are put in place are consistent, inclusive and aligned with the values of the organization. The series of workshops will be interactive, with anecdotes, and practice scenarios. Learn more/Register here.

9-12 April 2021 – Annual Meeting (held virtually)

Accepting Educational Responsibility

Education researchers are not merely scholars; we are also citizens of the places in which our scholarship is produced, disseminated, and implemented. Equity and justice in these places depend as much on our deep thinking as they do on what we do with what we know. Racism, xenophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and other manifestations of hate continually poison these places. Mass shootings occur in too many places close to where we live and do our academic work. Sexism, sexual harassment, and sexual assault occur too often within and beyond our workplaces. Myriad consequences of wealth inequity negatively affect people inside of and around the places where many of us think, teach, research, and write. Attendees of the 2021 AERA Annual Meeting will be empowered to accept greater responsibility for social problems that plague places around the world. Our identities as citizens and as scholars will be embraced.  Learn more.

International DEIJ Consultants and Facilitators

If you are interested in being featured as a DEIJ consultant in subsequent issues of this newsletter, please email us.

Each of the following facilitators and consultants offers professional learning experiences that educate and inspire participants to be agents of change. Through interactive and consciousness-raising workshops, each facilitator seeks to empower participants on their journey towards diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Participants should expect to come away from workshops and learning experiences with higher self-efficacy, knowledge, and skills in multicultural and social justice education.

Please find the list of facilitators and their contact information below. You can also find bios of all the consultants here. Note – Due to facilitator and consultant work schedules, it may be more convenient to reach out to a facilitator or consultant located in a different time zone from you.
