Kath Murdoch: Some wise words from the wonderful Linda Darling-Hammond. This has become SUCH a theme for me this year … a rejection of false dichotomies, a rejection of the notion of education “wars”: (phonics VS balanced literacy, direct instruction VS inquiry, etc.) – these are so often ‘ straw man ‘arguments … over simplified, under informed and absolutist. Most teachers understand that, while we need to be guided by strong principles and anchored in our beliefs – we can remain open, responsive and nuanced in our approaches. Polarisation is unhelpful at best and manipulative at worst.
