About the Awards….

Words. They’re a great invention.  By themselves they mean very little, yet when writers slide them together in various ways new universes are created.  The ISB Young Writers Awards celebrates this creativity.  This year we will publish a book of exceptional writing by middle school students.   To learn more, or to submit a piece of writing yourself, read on through these links:

  • genre - what kinds of writing can be submitted?
  • writers - who is eligible?

Any grade 6, 7, or 8 student attending the International School Bangkok, 2009-2010.

  • submitting - How do I submit my writing?

Easy - PantherNet.  Just login, go to “Young Writers Awards” and click on “submit my writing” . You might need to “register” yourself in the course first .. see this powerpoint for instructions.

  • judging - who gets to judge the writing?  What are they looking for?

The judges are writers, editors, and people experienced with the publishing industry.  The are no teachers or other ISB people doing the judging.  That means the judges may be looking at your words from a different perspective.  The kinds of things the judges are looking for are clarity of thought, creativity and imagination, emotion, voice, and evoking a reaction from the reader.  Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are always important, but the judges understand that middle school students are still learning. They will tolerate errors that don’t get in the way of understanding.

  • timeline - what are the deadlines?

Writing can be submitted from Sept. 1 - April 1, 2011.

  • what do I “win”?

(1) All student work that is submitted is published online. In this way everyone’s writing is recognized.

(2) Selected works of exceptional quality will be published in a book “ISB Young Writers, 2009-2010″.  Each writer who is selected will receive a copy of this book, as well as recognition at the end of the year assembly. The book will be available for purchase through amazon.com, and it will also be indexed as part of the library of congress.

When I log onto Panthernet, how do I go to the “Young Writers” page? It only shows my courses.

  2.   Mr.Romary Says:

Go to http://inside.isb.ac.th/youngwriters/about/downloads/ and open the file “enrolling in panthernet” — you have to add yourself to the course.

  3.   Claudia Says:

Ok, thank you. I found it. How many may I submit?

  4.   Claudia Says:

I would like to post more, but it won’t let me.

  5.   Mr.Romary Says:

I added another “assigment” so you can submit more writing…eventually I’ll add a bunch of these.

  6.   Claudia Says:

    Ok! Thank you!

  7.   Muhammad Hasyim Says:

Do we have to write only one piece of writing or more? Because There are 4 “Submit your writing….” buttons on the course.

  8.   Mr.Romary Says:

You can submit as many times as you like. If all you submit is one piece, that’s okay. Right now it is set-up for you to add 4 pieces. We will add more as time progresses. It’s up to you.

  9.   Gina Says:

If you wanted to submit a poem, would grammer and puntuation be judged in the same way? I’m asking this because many poems do not follow the standard grammer/puntuation (example: capitalization, puntuation, fragmented sentences.)

  10.   Mr.Romary Says:

Good question — poets are allowed to break the rules, especially if they are doing so in a deliberate and creative way! In poetry I believe the judges (not me) will be looking for emotion, voice, imagery, and writing the evokes a reaction from the reader. So submit your poems!

  11.   Sasha Says:

What if my writing piece is, let’s say, ten pages? Will it still be allowed?

  12.   Mr.Romary Says:

Yes. One page, ten pages, a hundred even…!

  13.   Gina Says:

When submitting a piece of writing, I have found that the format and seperate paragraphs that were there originally do not show up. Does that mean that when the judges look at it, the piece is different than the original file?

  14.   Mr.Romary Says:

The judges will see the file exactly as you had it arranged. It’s just that turntin.com will show you a “quick view” of the file as part of the submitting process. The only thing we will change is to remove your name if you had put that in the file.

  15.   Muhammad Hasyim Says:

So….ummmmmm….. we still put our name on the first page of the writing right?

  16.   Mr.Romary Says:

No need to put your name…but even if you did I would take it out. I still know it’s your writing because I can see it in PantherNet and also on turnitin.com, but the judges can’t see that (and I wont tell).

  17.   Gina Says:

When you be putting up more submission ‘buttons’? Soon, hopefully. :)

  18.   Mr. R Says:

    Okay…two more have been added…thanks

  19.   Claudia Says:

Can you please add a few more? ^^’
    Thank you.

  20.   Claudia Says:

    Mr. Romary,
It seems that my work has been deleted, or I think it is. When I click on the submit buttons, it doesn’t have my previous work on there. Do I have to repost everything again? Or can I submit more work that I made?

  21.   Am Says:

And…can the story that I am going to post be about 20 pages long?

  22.   Mr.Romary Says:

Hi Am — yes, the file you upload can be as long, or as short, as you need it to be. You upload on PantherNet.

  23.   Gina Says:

If you want to post more pieces, but you can’t remember which you’ve posted already, is there any way to check, or just resend the ones you’re not sure of?
I’d hate to hate to resend them because I’m sure it would mess up the system…

  24.   Gina Says:

If you want to post more pieces, but you can’t remember which you’ve posted already, is there any way to check, or just resend the ones you’re not sure of?
I’d hate to have to resend them because I’m sure it would mess up the system…

  25.   Hannah Says:

My computer won’t allow me to submit some writing. Is there another place I can submit?

  26.   Anjali Says:

When submitting a poem, will the standard rules for grammar, punctuation etc. be taken into account? When I write, I tend to not capitalize things that should and sometimes I create new words using a few real ones. Will this get in the way of my work being published?

  27.   Mr. R Says:

Good question. Poems, being poems, mean you can break the rules as you need for some creative effect! The judges understand that.

  28.   Chinu Says:

When I try to submit my writing, do I need Microsoft Power Point 2007 because when I clicked “enrolling” it won’t let me.

  29.   Mr. Romary Says:

hmmm…not sure what you mean by thus Chinu, maybe come by room 314 when you have time and let’s work this out…

  30.   Tay Tantivirun Says:

would be possible to take your writing piece out because you realize that you need to revise it?
    Thanks

  31.   Mr, Romary Says:

Just upload the revised version, make sure it has the same name, and then it will replace the previous file.

  32.   Harry Says:

When a copy of the book gets sold on Amazon.com, do you get paid if you are one of the authors?

  33.   Mr, Romary Says:

Nice question - are you hoping to get rich of this? That would be nice!

Any money that comes in goes to covering the costs of creating the book itself. If we do recover all the costs, then the plan was to donate any profit to a charity such as After The Wave. The first step, however, is to recover the expenses we had to put out (provided by the ISB PTA). We haven’t decided yet how much to charge for the book, but that’s because we don’t know yet how big the book will be.

  34.   Tay Tantivirun Says:

but what happen if you decided that you want to take your writing out?

  35.   Mr. Romary Says:

Once you have submitted some writing it is judged. If you upload another piece with the same name, then the first one is deleted. If the judges say “yes” it means it will be put into the book. We will be letting people know about this at the end of April. You can still say you don’t want to publish at that time.

  36.   Julie De Meyere Says:

I am trying to submit a piece of writing, but its not letting me because it says that I must “submit more than 20 words of text”, while my actually have 23 words. How do I submit it anyways?

  37.   Mr.Romary Says:

Hmmm, you might have to email that one to me and I will submit it on your behalf — not sure why that is happening.

  38.   Harry Says:

Can I please e-mail you my pieces? I am asking because Panthernet only allows me to submit one piece at a time and I don’t think I’ll be able to submit all my pieces by tomorrow using this method. Also, if I am submitting one of my blog posts as a Word document, then wouldn’t Turnitin.com report me as plagiarism?

  39.   Dome Says:

How will you know if the judges said yes to your writing?

  40.   Mr.Romary Says:

They are not quite finished with the judging, but by Monday we should know and then we can post a list of authors on this site.

  41.   Dome Says:

So, umm, where is the list of the authors?

  42.   Mr.Romary Says:

It’s coming…we just finalized the selections last night …I have some time today during periods 7-8 so I’ll try to get them online in that time.

  43.   Eng Says:

How do we check the judge’s comments on our work? I want to know what the judge’s thought about my different writing pieces.

  44.   Mr.Romary Says:

Ask your Humanities teacher…I emailed the comments to all the Humanities teachers last week. You can also come and see me and I can show you too.

  45.   Claudia Says:

    Mr. Romary,
Some pieces of my writing were submitted into the YWAs book last year, but I still haven’t received a copy of it. Can I still get one?
    Thank you.
