Teachers’ Bio’s

Erin Fitzgerald, Room 108

I am delighted to begin my fifth year teaching at ISB.  In my five years here, most people know me at “Ms. DeYoung”. However, I was married in January 2010 and this is my first year teaching as Mrs. Fitzgerald. My husband, Tim Fitzgerald is a 6th grade teacher here at ISB. As a professional, it’s exciting to be a part of such a dynamic team of teachers who are knowledgeable, hard working and enthusiastic!

Prior to teaching at ISB, my experiences have been in Boston, my hometown and The American School of Madrid, Spain. Over the past 16 years, I have taught first, second and fourth grades.   I have an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Ecological Teaching and Learning.

Since teaching at ISB I have been engrossed in learning all I can about language acquisition and teaching reading and writing.  Currently I am my second year of a two program to be a Literacy Coach. I am excited that I will be able to put into practice all that I am learning.  I am looking forward to a wonderful school year working with your children to foster and nurture their love of learning.

Susan Souza, Room 107

Hello, My name is Susan Souza.  I am a native Californian, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.    I graduated in Child Development from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  My first teaching experience was as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bangkok. After returning from Thailand, I received my teaching credential and taught PreK through 2nd grade classes in California.   Working overseas was a long-term goal.   As I begin my 14th year at I.S.B., I am enthusiastic about returning to the First Grade team and proud to be a member of the elementary school staff at International School Bangkok.

On a personal note, my husband Jim and I have four grown children and are the grandparents of two.   Since my own children are never far from my mind, parenting has given me a good understanding of the importance of teacher/parent communication and sensitivity to parenting issues.

My teaching philosophy can be summed up by my favorite educational quote:  “Everyone who got where he is, has had to begin where he was.” By Robert Louis Stevenson.  I believe in being respectful of the differences in children’s learning styles and challenging them academically from where they are, in order to help them to reach their highest potential.

Mrs. Hardman, Room 105

I am looking forward to my 4th year teaching Ist Grade at ISB. It is a privilege to be working with such a dedicated and enthusiastic group of teachers again. My teaching experience prior to ISB was 14 years teaching first Grade at Hong Kong International School.  All my earlier years were in New Zealand teaching Kindergarten through Grade 3. Part of my teaching was teaching Reading Recovery. My husband Peter is a Math teacher in the High School and our two children work in Hong Kong. I am excited to be beginning a new year and getting to know you and your child.
