Dear Parents,

We have started our non-fiction writing unit!  The children are currently writing How-To books.  The goal for this writing is to prepare them for more formal procedural writing.  They choose a topic in which they are an expert and then write clear detailed steps.  They love this new style of writing.  You can lend a hand by helping them think of topics they can write about and then asking them to tell you the steps.

Making Words Secret Word: Today’s letters are a, e, f, h, r, s, t.  The secret word is ‘fathers’; the skill taught is that words that end with an ‘r’ sound is spelled ‘er’.

This homework is due next Monday.

Dear Parents,

Welcome back after a long weekend.  I spent my time in Nagoya, Japan attending a conference with Debbie Miller.  Debbie Miller is a reading guru and I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to listen to her and learn from her.

Seems like your children all had a great weekend spending time with you.  Many were so excited to bring back their mealworms and talk about what happened over the break.  Please return all mealworms, bags, and vials to school.

A Big Thank You!

Last week we had a successful International Week.  The children had a wonderful time visiting all the countries on Thursday and all the great snacks on Monday.  Parents, thank you so much for all of the work you put into making last week such a success!

New Homework:

Beginning this week, I will be sending a new, but optional, homework. It is called Daily Corrections. This new homework will be sent every other week.  So, one week it will be the Making Words homework and the next week will be the Daily Corrections sheet.  Last week the class and I went over a set of sentences and corrected them together.  Hopefully your child will know how to do this week’s sentences independently.

All of the sentences have mistakes in them; some of the mistakes are spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure.  Your child should first read the sentence to see if it ‘sounds’ right, and then apply editing marks to the sentence, finally, your child should write the sentence below with all of the corrections.  This homework is great for practicing grammar and spelling.  Your child is only expected to do one sentence a day.  The sheet is due on the next Monday.  When your child returns the sentences to school I will correct them and return the homework to you.

In our sixth unit of study in Math, we will return to number sense. This unit is called Number Games and Crayon Puzzles. We will be working on mathematical ideas such as composing numbers with two or three addends and solving addition and subtraction problems.

Throughout this unit, students will be working toward the following goals:
-Find at least five 2-addend combinations of 10.
-Combine two small quantities by counting on.
-Interpret (retell the action and sequence) and solve addition and subtraction story problems.
-Subtract one small quantity from another.

Dear Parents,

I’ve been reading a book about how children learn and am very excited about what it says. Over the weekend, I read about the importance of having children support their ideas and thinking. In reading, and other subjects, students are taught and encouraged to give an opinion or state their thinking and then support their answers. For instance, a child might say “I predict the little girl will get a surprise from her grandfather because he was asking her what she wanted for her birthday then snuck out to get her a gift.” As you can see in grade one the answers and supporting evidence may seem simple, but it is a strong habit that can be taught.

At home, this important skill can be supported through conversations. While talking about everyday events you can ask for their opinions and then ask, “Why do you think that?”

Making Words Secret Word: Today’s letters are e, e, o, b, d, r, v, y, y. The secret word is ‘everybody’; the skill taught is that the ‘y’ sometimes makes the ‘e’ sound.

Room 106 is learning how to measure. The children measured various fish to see if they are long enough to be ‘keepers’. Look at what they caught! :)

February 8 – February 12

February 8, 2010

Dear Parents,

We will begin our new Insect Unit today.  Some classes have already started, so your child may already be aware of what is going on in grade one.  Our science units are inquiry based, which means that it emphasizes the discoveries that children make as they go through the science lessons.  With this in mind, I would like to ask you to direct the conversations that you have with your child about this unit on the observations and questions your child may have.  One major learning your child will have during the unit is that the lifecycle of the mealworm goes from egg, larva, pupa, then a beetle.  Many children at this age believe all larva become a moth or butterfly.  Grade one encourages parents to have an active part in their child’s interests and daily learning, but ask that during this unit the discovery be kept intact for your child to experience through their own observation.

New Homework:  Beginning last Monday, a new homework had been assigned.  Each morning the class has a Making Words lesson where they make words with letters, they eventually try to find a secret word made from all the letters.  On Friday, the class reviews the lessons taught during the week and then add high frequency words to the word wall.  Each Monday, I will send out a form called Making Words Review, which asks the children to make 2, 3, 5, and more letter words with letters provided.  Your child is asked to return this homework on Thursday.

Today’s letters are e, i, c, g, h, n, w.  The secret word is ‘chewing’, the emphasis is on the ‘ew’ sound like in words new and few.

Dear Parents,

I hope you have been noticing big improvements in reading.  Around January to about April first graders begin to synthesize what they have learned about decoding words, reading fluently, giving strong retells and more.  The pieces begin to fit and growth in reading begins to accelerate.  Thank you for working with them at home and becoming a team with our class.

New Homework:  Beginning today a new homework has been given out.  Each morning the class has a lesson where they make words with letters, they eventually try to find a secret word that uses all the letters.  On Friday, the class reviews the lessons taught during the week and then add any new high frequency words to the word wall.  Each Monday, I will send out a form called Making Words Review, which asks the children to make 2, 3, 5, and more letter words with the letters provided.  Your child is asked to return this homework on Thursday.

Today’s letters are a, o, b, l, l, n, s, w.  The secret word is ‘snowplow’ (oops!) ’snowball’, the emphasis in this word is that the ‘ow’ makes the long o sound like in ‘snow’.

Dear Parents,

Recently I read something that I thought would be great to share with you.  I read that rather than praising your child with “You are so smart!” or “Wow, you did a great job!” it is more effective, rewarding to your child if you tell them exactly what it is they did.  For instance, if your child finished a hard homework, you may say, “You did a great job of finishing this hard homework by not giving up.” By telling them what it is that they did well, your child will be able to recreate their success in other places.

Dear Parents,

I’m read a great book on how children have different minds and ways of learning.  As a teacher we all know this, but still need to stay current on latest research and strategies to help work with students to help them learn to the best of their abilities.

One way the book said parents can help their child do their best at school is to provide healthy food and enough sleep.  Thank you for helping your child learn.
