Room 106 is learning how to measure. The children measured various fish to see if they are long enough to be ‘keepers’. Look at what they caught! :)

February 8 – February 12

February 8, 2010

Dear Parents,

We will begin our new Insect Unit today.  Some classes have already started, so your child may already be aware of what is going on in grade one.  Our science units are inquiry based, which means that it emphasizes the discoveries that children make as they go through the science lessons.  With this in mind, I would like to ask you to direct the conversations that you have with your child about this unit on the observations and questions your child may have.  One major learning your child will have during the unit is that the lifecycle of the mealworm goes from egg, larva, pupa, then a beetle.  Many children at this age believe all larva become a moth or butterfly.  Grade one encourages parents to have an active part in their child’s interests and daily learning, but ask that during this unit the discovery be kept intact for your child to experience through their own observation.

New Homework:  Beginning last Monday, a new homework had been assigned.  Each morning the class has a Making Words lesson where they make words with letters, they eventually try to find a secret word made from all the letters.  On Friday, the class reviews the lessons taught during the week and then add high frequency words to the word wall.  Each Monday, I will send out a form called Making Words Review, which asks the children to make 2, 3, 5, and more letter words with letters provided.  Your child is asked to return this homework on Thursday.

Today’s letters are e, i, c, g, h, n, w.  The secret word is ‘chewing’, the emphasis is on the ‘ew’ sound like in words new and few.

Dear Parents,

I hope you have been noticing big improvements in reading.  Around January to about April first graders begin to synthesize what they have learned about decoding words, reading fluently, giving strong retells and more.  The pieces begin to fit and growth in reading begins to accelerate.  Thank you for working with them at home and becoming a team with our class.

New Homework:  Beginning today a new homework has been given out.  Each morning the class has a lesson where they make words with letters, they eventually try to find a secret word that uses all the letters.  On Friday, the class reviews the lessons taught during the week and then add any new high frequency words to the word wall.  Each Monday, I will send out a form called Making Words Review, which asks the children to make 2, 3, 5, and more letter words with the letters provided.  Your child is asked to return this homework on Thursday.

Today’s letters are a, o, b, l, l, n, s, w.  The secret word is ‘snowplow’ (oops!) ’snowball’, the emphasis in this word is that the ‘ow’ makes the long o sound like in ‘snow’.

The month of January had many highlights, please check out the photos to see your children creating, learning and cooperating.

The students created survey questions and collected data with a partner. Then they made representations of their data and shared the results with the class. In some of the photos you can see the students begin to learn about linear measurement. In these photos they are measuring fish to find out if they are “keepers”.

We also enjoyed a class visit from our 5th grade buddies. Ms. Mc Aloon read and then gave us a copy of Baby Brains the Rock Star. We practiced turning and talking and making predictions about the book with our buddies. You can see from their faces how much they loved the story.

On Friday we celebrated the 100th day of school. The children rotated through the five first grade classrooms and participated in fun learning activities that had to do with the number 100.

Dear Parents,

Recently I read something that I thought would be great to share with you.  I read that rather than praising your child with “You are so smart!” or “Wow, you did a great job!” it is more effective, rewarding to your child if you tell them exactly what it is they did.  For instance, if your child finished a hard homework, you may say, “You did a great job of finishing this hard homework by not giving up.” By telling them what it is that they did well, your child will be able to recreate their success in other places.

We are learning about measurement.  We are learning how to make accurate measurements and how different units can be used to measure objects.

Dear Parents,

I’m read a great book on how children have different minds and ways of learning.  As a teacher we all know this, but still need to stay current on latest research and strategies to help work with students to help them learn to the best of their abilities.

One way the book said parents can help their child do their best at school is to provide healthy food and enough sleep.  Thank you for helping your child learn.

We invited our parents to show off how much we have grown as writers and how much we have learned about revision.
