  • Homework Update

    August 21st, 2009 by johnk

    Wednesday + Thursday, March 10 - 11 (Both Classes):

Complete the student-led conference form that you received in class and choose 3 or more samples of your second semester work.  Bring your portfolio (folder with a pocket) along with the form and samples of work on the day of your conference. Your samples of work can also include blog posts (A computer cart will be available in the classroom during conferences.) If your parent(s) can not come in for a conference, you still earn credit by completing the form, putting samples of work in your portfolio, having a conference at home and bringing in your folder next week. A copy of the student-led conference form is at the Class Documents page.

Read Chs. 1 - 7 of the class novel, Waiting for the Rain, and complete your lit circle role sheet. Be ready for a quiz next Thursday on these chapters. A link to the audio tracks is under the Language Arts links on this blog. (Research shows that students have stronger comprehension and vocabulary development when they listen to the audio version of a book as they are reading the book silently.)

Continue preparing your presentation on your chosen chapter of the South Africa booklet. Your team will earn most credit if you do the following:  1) Present the most important and interesting topics in your chapter.  Go in depth but try to limit your presentation to 1  - 3 topics.  The challenge is to somehow make the information relevant to your audience.  2)  Make sure that information that you present has been paraphrased - watch out for the plagiarizing trap!  3)  At the beginning of your presentation, let us know the chapter number and title, but also give us a ‘newspaper-like headline’ that captures the most important information from your chapter.  4)  Make reference to one outcome statement, directly or indirectly.  Try to cover as many details of the outcome statement as possible. (A copy of the outcome statements is at the Class Documents page.)

    Tuesday, March 9

Per. 5 - 6:  See yesterday’s note about the South Africa booklet chapter.

Per. 1 - 2:  Complete the conference sheet and choose 3 or more samples of your second semester work.  Also, remember to read Chs. 1 - 7 of the class novel and complete your lit. circle role sheet. Be ready for a quiz next Thursday on these chapters.

    Monday, March 8

Continue studying your team’s chapter in the South Africa booklet. Be ready to do further preparation for a presentation on your chapter.

    Friday, March 5

Read and study the chapter that you and your group chose in the South Africa booklet.  Make sure that you jot down 5 - 10 notes on interesting and important details in the chapter.  Put the information in you own words.  You need to do your notetaking in your learning log (or off the computer/binder paper and taped/stapled in your learning log before class for you to earn credit.

Check the 3 notes from Thursday, March 4:  completing the Community Service Survey (thanks from Sara and the GIN students), checking the Conference Schedule, and taking care of Make-up Work

    Thursday, March 4

    Both Classes:

    1. Students in the GIN club would like you to go to the following link to complete a survey about community service activities at ISB. The survey should only take a few minutes  - when finished, just click ‘Done’ at the bottom of the page. The survey is open through tomorrow. (Thanks for the reminder from Sara.)  The link to the survey =

    Community Service Activities Survey

    2. Parents have been signing up for student-led parent-teacher conferences scheduled for next Thursday and Friday.  Parents received information from Mr. B-T on how to sign up online. If your parents need help at this, they can contact Mr. B-T at:  maurilib@isb.ac.th

Here is the list of conferences for students in my Humanities classes scheduled so far:

    conference-schedule

    3. As mentioned in class, check PowerSchool and if necessary, take care of any missing assignments.  Reminder - You needed to upload Book Review #5 to Destiny as well as Turnitin.com.  Mrs. Kelsey has sent the list of those who have uploaded to Destiny as of noon today.  Check PowerSchool to see if there is a note for you at this assignment about needing to upload to Destiny.

    Wednesday, March 3

    Both Classes:

Add any follow-up notes on the hero’s journey graphic to ‘The Power of One’ that we have seen so far. If you were absent yesterday or today, you can watch the video clips for the movie at YouTube. Here’s the link to Part 1 of the Youtube video clips. You can then click on Part 2 of the clips to go over what we have covered in class so far:       \’The Power of One\’ - Part 1

Check PowerSchool and if necessary, complete any work for an assignment that you have zero (()%) credit. Make up work is due this Friday. Also, if you earned below 8 out of 10 on the Hero’s Journey quiz, study your notes and you can retake the quiz on Thursday or before school starts on Friday.

    Tuesday, March 2

Both classes:  Study sheet on Ch. 4 of the South Africa  (’Apartheid’) due tomorrow.  Make sure your work is in your own words and a good idea is to get your name and date at top right of your print-out document. See yesterday’s update note for more details.

Period 5 - 6:  Quiz tomorrow on the hero’s journey - see yesterday’s update note.

    Monday, March 1

Check the update note for last Thursday.

The hero’s journey quiz tomorrow will include 10 terms from the packet of h.j. information for you to match with their given meanings. The quiz will not include a graphic for you to complete, but one term on the graphic, but not directly referred to in the other information, will be on the quiz. Barge trip students - you can come in before school starts and take the quiz (5 - 10 minutes), or you can wait until Wednesday.

Your table for Ch. 4 of the South Africa booklet (’Apartheid’) should have the 8 laws and acts listed below. (The first is already given on your table.)  Make sure you include the years the laws were passed.  Your table of information, in your own words, is due on Wed.

    1) Population Registration Act  2) Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act  3) Immorality Amendment Act  4) Group Areas Act  5)Natives (Abolition of Passes and Coordination of Documents) Act  6) Native Laws Amendment Act  7) Petty Apartheid  8) Bantu Education Act

      Hi Mr. Kenney,

I still need some help with adding you to my blog roll. It’s a bit confusing for me too, but I managed to get to your site and comment.

I watched the video about Christian the Lion before with Cha and we were both so inspired by it. I thought that lions were just cruel and vicious animals, but this video really shows the soft side in them. The video is also really sweet because it shows how strong the relationship between man and animal can be. Every time I watch this video, I feel a whole wave of different emotions. It really brings joy to see the reunion in Africa a year later. - Katie. August 27th 2009
