    Thursday, September 2

Period 5 - 6:  Complete the writing survey form and then create a you blog post based on an author’s quote that you chose from the classroom wall or on your own. Have an image (with embedded URL), the quote, and then background about the author (source noted) and finishing with what the quote means and how it relates to your experiences at writing.  Check the example at the most recent post on this blog. Due Monday.

Period 7 - 8:  Be ready to present your culture/identity posters in class tomorrow.

Both classes:  Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 13.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

    Wednesday, September 1

Period 5 - 6:  Tomorrow, be ready to present your group’s skit based on the skit for Lao-tze’s quote, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”  Make sure you have submitted comments for the memoirs of two students, one from our class and one from the other class. (Check PowerSchool to see if you have any assignments that need to be completed, and check to see if you need to turn in your learning log with 5 vocabulary from independent reading - which was due today.)

Period 7 - 8:  Be ready to present your culture/identity poster on Friday. A set of 5 words from independent reading in your learning log, following the format we went over in class is due on Monday.

Both classes:  Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 13.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

    Tuesday, August 31

Period 5 - 6:  Your set of 5 words from independent reading is due tomorrow, in your learning log, following the format shown in class.  Tomorrow, after your MAP reading test, you will have time to work on the skit for the Lao-tze quote.  Each group needs to write out a script for the skit, on binder paper, explaining the story and the lines that members of the group will be saying, including one person saying the quote.  Be ready to hand in your script by the end of class on Wednesday.  You’ll present your skit on Thursday.

Period 7 - 8:  Your set of 5 words from independent reading is due on Monday, in your learning log, following the format shown in class.  Tomorrow, after your MAP reading test, you will have time to complete the work you were doing on culture/identity.  Be ready to present on Friday.

Both classes:  Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 13.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

    Monday, August 30

See the notes for Friday, August 27

    Friday, August 27

Period 5 - 6:  Submit comments for the memoirs of two students at their blog posts. Your comment should start off with one aspect of the memoir that you liked.  Then comment on the values (those things considered important) that you see reflected in the writer’s memoir and how that adds to the identity of the writer.  Per. 5 - 6, your 5 words from independent reading are due in your learning log on Wednesday, following the format given in class,

Period 7 - 8:  Be ready to share your notes for the 5 aspects of culture that we started on Thursday.

Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 13.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

    Both classes:

    Thursday, August 26

Both classes:  Use the checklist you received in class today to make sure the blog post for your memoir has all of the 9 necessary ingredients on the sheet.  A file of the checklist is at the Class Documents page. Your blog post should be ready to be judged by tomorrow morning. Let’s wait until our next class to do the assignment about leaving comments at other students’ blogs.

Note - If you had a problem in creating a link in your blog post to your memoir document, check to see that your Word document is saved as a .doc format and not .docx format. Then follow the steps on the sheet.  (A file with the directions is at the Class Documents page.)

    Wednesday, August 25

If you didn’t pass in the final draft to your memoir, do so tomorrow.  To earn full credit for your draft work, you should also pass in the earlier draft(s), feedback form and pre-writing organizer notes.  If you have further questions about your edited draft, ask in class tomorrow.

The follow-up assignment for your memoir is to create a post at your blog. The title of your post should be something such as - My Memoir.  At the top of the post, have an image that reflects your memoir.  Under the image, in the first chunk of text, give a preview to your memoir: What is your memoir about? Include some ‘hook’ to get readers interested in finding out more.  After a space, the next chunk of text should be your reflection on two or more aspects of the process you took in doing the memoir. After leaving a space, you can have a sentence such as:  You can read my memoir by clicking here. The directions for creating a link to your memoir  is at the Class Documents page. Note that a couple of steps will be worded a little differently if you are working on a PC. You can see a sample post for the memoir on this blog.

If you haven’t already done so, create a 6-word version of your memoir and submit it at the comments link for the most recent post at this blog. Try to capture the essence or main idea of your memoir (e.g., what you learned about yourself) in those six words!

Make sure you bring your learning log (yellow spiral notebook) to class each day for notetaking.

Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 13.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

If you have further questions about your draft, you can ask in class on Wednesday. By the end of class on Wednesday, you can turn in your final draft.

Give yourself at least 30 minutes this weekend for independent reading - get in ‘zone’ with a good book.

Now that you (should) have passed in your memoir for teacher editing, you can try to create a 6-word version of your memoir.  The most recent post of this blog has a video with examples of 6-word memoirs, along with the comments link for you to submit your 6-word memoir.  Try to capture the essence or main idea of your memoir (e.g., what you learned about yourself) in those six words. Comments will be published on Monday.

Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 13.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

Note #1:  Cheryl K. recommends using  the free online proofreader called PageRater.  Try it with any of your writing pieces.  You might want to add it to the set of links on your blog. I have it with the Language Arts links on this blog. Thanks, Cheryl!

Note #2:  Check the blog roll on this blog.  If your name is not on the blog roll, please go to the comments link at the bottom of this page and submit the url for your blog. The last part of your url will do:   http://blogs.isb.ac.th/

    Thursday, August 19

Bring in your memoir, 1.5 or double-spaced so that you can get some peer revision in class tomorrow.  You will be passing in your memoir at the end of class for teacher-editing.

Book review #1, uploaded at Destiny and Turnitin is due Monday, Sept. 3.  Directions/samples sheet is at Class Documents.

    Wednesday, August 18

As you now know, tomorrow we are having the beginning-of -the-year Common Assessment for Writing.  Although the assessment will not count as a grade at Power School, you will later receive feedback on how you did at expository essay writing in the categories of:  Content, Organization, Sentence Structures, Vocabulary and Conventions. So, do the best you can at explaining in paragraph form one of the topics that we went over at the Writing section of Panthernet (linked at this blog).  You can not bring in any prepared work, but you can look over the directions and prompt choices again.

You can use as much time as you need during the full block tomorrow for the assessment.  If there is time remaining, you can do independent reading (a great break from keyboarding!) or you can do further work on your memoir.

The rubric for the memoir is at Class Documents along with the sample memoir by Annie Dillard.  In addition, a file with a set of student memoirs is also at Class Documents.  Finally, you can read a memoir by Ms. Jones - posted at her blog (linked at this blog).  Find out what her class of 2005 meant to her, including the thought behind one of her students calling her, ‘Mama’!

The directions we went over today  for creating a Destiny book review, along with 3 samples, are at the Class Documents page. Choose a book you have finished reading this semester.  Your first book review, uploaded to Destiny and Turnitin.com is due by Monday, Sept. 13.

    Tuesday, August 17

For your  next class, you should have pre-writing notes about your memoir, using a organizer; and a complete draft (double-spaced).  There is a file at Class Documents that will give you a set of student memoir samples - read and take advantage of what you learn!

    Monday, August 16

Due at beginning of next class:  pre-writing notes for your memoir and draft work.

Remember to bring independent reading to each class.

    Friday, August 13

If your partner indicated you needed more time to work on your blog post on the follow-up to ‘The Karate Kid’ movie, you can do so over the weekend.  The feedback sheet is in the Class Documents page.

Your photo/goal card is due on Monday.  Remember, try to fill in all of the blank space on one side with visual images of your identity (photos, drawings, etc.).  On the back of the card, indicate 2 academic goals, one social goal and one personal goal. Include what you need to do to accomplish your goals.  A sample of a goal card that we saw in class is at the Class Documents page.

Make a list of 3 - 5 events that you experiences during vacation and be ready to choose 1 that is the best example of an incident in which you learned something about yourself.  The direction sheet and pre-writing organizer are at the Class Documents page.  (If you want, you can get a jump on the pre-writing.)

Also - remember to finish the Reading Survey that you began in class on Friday.

Bring your independent reading selection to class each day. (We’ll be going to the library on Monday.)

    Wednesday, August 11

Both Classes, due on Friday: Complete a Vacation Reading Follow-up for one book that you read during this past vacation.  You can write out your ideas in complete sentences on the form that you received in class, but a better idea is to get your ideas down in a Word document.  You can use the Word file at the Class Documents page of this blog. Examples of vacation follow-up reflections for the novels The Life of Pi and Ender’s Game are at the Class Documents page of this blog.  Also be ready to turn in your Reading Log sheet.

Both classes, due on Friday:  If you haven’t already done so, submit comments at the first post at this blog (Welcome to Grade 8!).  The comments will be published later on Friday.

Both classes, due on Friday: Create a post at your blog on the follow-up connection to the scenes we watched from ‘Karate Kid.’  The main focus of your post is about the process of learning. (The directions and the topics for you to cover in your post are in a file at the Class Documents page of this blog.)

    * Remember to bring in a book for independent reading each day!

    Tuesday, August 10

Period 7 - 8: Due tomorrow, the Course Overview that you received in class on Monday.  Make sure that you write your name and signature at the bottom of the last page and have a parent sign his or her name, too. Also, due tomorrow, the Questionnaire that you received in class on Monday (both sides - all the way through!).

Both Classes: Due on Friday, the Vacation Reading Follow-up for one book that you read during this past vacation.  You can write out your ideas in complete sentences on the form, but a better idea is to get your ideas down in a Word document; you can use the Word file at the Class Documents page of this blog. Examples of vacation follow-up reflections for the novels The Life of Pi and Ender’s Game are at the Class Documents page of this blog.  Also be ready to turn in your Reading Log sheet.

Period 5 - 6:  In addition to the above, submit comments of 3 - 5 sentences for the first post at this blog (’Welcome to Grade 8′). The other assignment given today in Period 5 - 6 is for you to create a post at your blog on the follow-up connection to the scenes we watched from ‘Karate Kid.’

    Monday, August 9

Due Tomorrow for Period 5 - 6 (Wednesday for Period 7 - 8): the Course Overview that you received in class today.  Make sure that you write your name and signature at the bottom of the last page and have a parent sign his or her name, too.

Also due tomorrow for Period 5 - 6 (Wednesday for Period 7 - 8) : the Questionnaire that you received in class today (both sides - all the way through!).

Due this Friday (both classes):  Complete the Vacation Reading Follow-up form for one of the books that you read during this past vacation.  You can write out your ideas on the form or complete the form as a Word Document. Examples of follow-up reflections for the novels The Life of Pi and Ender’s Game are at the Class Documents page of this blog.  Also be ready to turn in your Reading Log sheet.

(Check the Class Documents page for other handouts given in class.)
