Dear English 10 Class,

It has been a true pleasure and delight to teach you this year.  Sometimes you don’t really know what you have learned from a teacher (or a student) until time has passed.  I hope you look back at your 10th grade year and see all the accomplishments - large and small - that will later make you not just the student you are, but also the person you present to the world.  I only ask one thing of you as you move further along the pathway to adulthood:  please continue to read, question and make connections.  (Hmm, that sounds like three things, doesn’t it, but I really see it as one action.)

Read over the summer - and not just the assigned text - and continue to read over the next two years (and not just the texts assigned in class).  I have included a link to a website that has a list of GOOD books for you to read.  The major predictor of academic success is the AMOUNT of time you spend reading.  Before you turn on the TVor sign onto Facebook, consider reading for just 5 minutes.  If after that time you are not enjoying yourself, then find a new book!!  I know that it sounds extremely geeky but I read all the time in high school and still managed to do well in school, have a part-time job, be an officer in several clubs/organization and have a social life. The more you read, the more you will enjoy it.  There - those are my parting words - go forth and enjoy the summer and I will see you in August.

Just in case you lose your assignment - here it is!  If you lose your book, well, that you will have to handle on your own!

  1. Keep working on your staging papers - the final copy is still DUE Monday, May 24 with a TurnItIn.com receipt plus all drafts.  Please try to email each other your second drafts for comments.  We have to be flexible and positive!
  2. I will post an exam study guide tomorrow to this blog - check back and study over the weekend.
  3. We will still watch “Othello” in class on Monday - feel free to bring a snack to share.

Ok, guys, this is obviously not the best or easiest time for many of us to have end-of-year projects/papers.  I need each of you to focus on what you CAN do and be creative in getting your assignments done.

For those of you who CANNOT come to school, if you can, please email me - first, tell me that your are ok, and second give me a status on your staging paper.  You can send each other (and your other classmates) rough drafts for peer evaluation.  I will post the evaluation worksheet on the blog tomorrow morning.

For those of you who CAN come to school, stay focused on what you can control, i.e., your school work.  A hard copy of your first draft of the staging paper is still due on Tuesday and you should start reviewing for the semester exam.  The final copy of your staging paper is due on Thursday, with a TurnItIn.com receipt attached (and all drafts too).  Next Monday we will watch “Othello” and discuss the review for Wednesday.

Ok, if we do not have school on Friday your at-home assignment is to begin writing your staging paper.  You MUST bring a hard-copy of your first draft to class on Tuesday.  We will have Writers’ Workshops on both Tuesday and Thursday so be prepared to use your time wisely!

If Brianna is not able to make it to school on Friday, her group will perform their scene on Tuesday.  The same holds true for any other group if one of their cast members is not able to make it to school.

Check back on Friday morning and evening for any additional information.

Keep rehearsing - I saw alot of hard work today but also a few things that need to be resolved.  Make sure you have your scenery, costumes, etc worked out before class on Monday - you will want to use your class time to run your lines!
