Hello fellow readers,
This year I have moved from the Middle School to the High School. Last year, one blog worked incredibly well for my Humanities 7 classes. This year, I have divided my blog into two new blogs (it had twins), and they are now housed at the following locations:
D Watts 9 and D Watts 10
Come check them out some time. Thanks for reading!
Find an example of social commentary and post it on your blog, either by providing a link or embedding the item. All examples must be school appropriate. When in doubt, ask your teacher. Your example must be one of the following:
· Video
· Film clip
· Picture
· Political cartoon
· Poem
· Song lyrics
· Art work: painting, sculpture
Discuss your example:
· Paragraph 1: Describe your example and why you selected it. What message is the creator trying to convey? Be sure to include the name of the creator and date of creation. Is there a historical background that you need to explain?
· Paragraph 2: Which Connected World theme(s) does it address? Be sure to explain how it is related to this/these themes. Be sure to give some examples regarding how it connects to the theme(s) (things in the words or image that show the relationship to the theme i.e. the light bulb in Picasso’s Guernica representing the torturer’s cell, and torture often occurs as a vicious part of war and is a direct violation of the basic fundamentals of human rights).
· Paragraph 3: Reflect on how this piece of social commentary impacts you and your thoughts on the message and themes.
Please copy and paste the wonderful advice you have created for the upcoming grade 7 students and post it to your blog.
In case you forgot the assignment, here it goes:
What advice would you give to the 7th graders next year? You can write about:
- school
- parents
- friends
- homework
- socials
- Time management
- or anything else you wish you had known before you entered 7th grade
Think about what you wish you had known or what might have helped you at the beginning of this year.
Remember to proof your work when you’re finished. You may want to add an image as well.
This is due no later than Wednesday, May 27th.
This week you have freedom. . . freedom regarding what you read and what you write. Blog #7 should have something to do with “The Connected World” but I want to hear what you want to say. Think about your region, your issue, this week’s guest speaker. . .what is on your mind? You may want to revisit something you have recently discovered, return to a website you found helpful, or reflect on the process. The choice is yours, and I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on what matters to you in our connected world.
Monday: Meeting with Issue groups, Personal Narratives due in class
Tuesday: 2nd meeting of Book Clubs; blog #6 due (watch this video about blogging if you get a chance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN2I1pWXjXI )
Wednesday: Human Trafficking presentation
Thursday: Humanities 7 Writing Assessment both blocks
Friday: Meet with Connected World Issue groups and finalize presentations for Monday
Blog #6 is upon us and here is your mission. . . go to: http://www.culturecrossing.net/index.php and look up information on a minimum of three countries in your region. Look at “basic information”, pick at least three areas to investigate. Make sure you select the same three for all three countries in your region. (Some interesting ones to examine: personal space & touching, Eye contact, Views of time, Gender issues, Communication style, Gestures). Blog about what you’ve learned. Some things to consider: Are these cultural practices generally the same or different for all three countries from your region? In what ways are these cultural practices similar to or different from your own culture? Blog about any difficulties or customs that would be hard for you to adapt to if you were to relocate to that region. Which customs would be easy for you to adapt? Why? Is your issue more or less likely to be a problem due to social norms in that culture? Get to know your world…
This blog should be four paragraphs:
· 1st Paragraph: Introduction (Culture in general, a bit about the Culture Crossing web site, your region, the countries you selected)
· 2nd Paragraph: Basic Information (Discuss your three aspects of “Basic Information” that you decided to examine and their practices in three countries of your region. Are these cultural practices generally the same or different for all three countries from your region?)
· 3rd Paragraph: Comparison (What are these practices in your own culture? In what ways are these cultural practices similar to or different from your own culture?)
· 4th Paragraph: Reflection and conclusion: (Blog about any difficulties or customs that would be hard for you to adapt to if you were to relocate to that region. Which customs would be easy for you to adapt? Why? Is your issue more or less likely to be a problem due to social norms in that culture?)

Thursday: Writing Assessment
A. To prepare for blog #5:
1. go to topix.com and do a search for your issue and region
2. read 1-3 articles pertaining to your issue
3. if you can not find an article at topix.com, do a google search on your isssue and one particular country in your region. The key is to learn more about your issue and how it relates to your region in the world, not one single web site. Learn from the tools available to you.
B. To write your blog:
1. begin by introducing what you have read (author, title, etc)
2. explain what insight you have gained about your issue
3. explain what insight you have gained about your region
4. write about about what actions should be taken next to resolve your issue, new questions you now have about your issue, or more information you would like to know about your issue
